Summary: | ProQuest: ... denotes formula omitted.) - S. A. HSU AND BRIAN W. BLANCHARD Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Using the concept of integrated kinetic energy, Powell and Reinhold (2007a) proposed two ranking scales: one for wind destructive potential ( W^sub dp^) and the other for surge/waves (S^sub dp^. The maximum open-ocean surge along the storm track induced by the wind stress (Sx) is related linearly with the maximum significant wave height (H^sub smax^), such that (Hsu 2004) S^sub xmax^ ∝ H^sub smax^(1) and from the Shore Protection Manual (USACE 1984, 3-48) H^sub xmax^ ∝ V^sub ms^[radical]R^sub 18^, (2) where V^sub ms^ (m s^sup -1^) is the maximum sustained wind speed at 10 m and R^sub 18^ (m) is the fetch (as a surrogate). REINHOLD Institute for Business and Home Safety, Tampa, Florida We are pleased that Hsu and Blanchard (2008, hereafter HB08) have taken up our challenge (in Powell and Reinhold 2007, hereafter PR07) to investigate alternative metrics for tropical cyclone impacts. |
