Summary:Large section sizes often require faculty to employ electronic homework systems to evaluate student work. Faculty at ___________ University have developed and used such a system and found students in an undergraduate statics class preferred submitting hard copies of textbook problem sets instead. This study surveyed approximately 100 students in these classes during the summer and fall of 2012 with the goal of identifying the underlying factors that influence students’ perceptions and preferences about homework format. The study used a survey instrument and initial results indicated that students preferred homework formats that 1) allowed multiple attempts if they were incorrect at first, 2) provided detailed feedback about any mistakes, 3) allowed them to complete at their own pace and stop as needed, and 4) allowed them to work collaboratively with classmates on homework problems. Students reported that lack of convenient computer access and avoiding new things were not important factors in their homework format preference. The findings of this survey provide detailed guidance for faculty and instructional designers interested in improving electronic statics homework.
