Summary: | 1An Inquiry-Guided Learning Approach to Process Integration, Simulation, and EconomicsThis paper provides an overview of how inquiry-guided learning (IGL) has been introduced intothe first senior-level design course at a Large University (Process Integration, Simulation, andEconomics). This has been part of an NSF-sponsored project to reform chemical engineeringundergraduate curriculum. First, the paper describes the course content and how the aspects ofintegration, simulation, and economics are integrated. Then, focus is given to two computer-aided modules (interlinked curriculum components or ICCs) that were developed to foster thestudents’ IGL experience in the areas of mass and energy integration. The ICCs includepretesting, background, examples, exercises, and post-testing. The exercises are created usinginteractive computer tools that allow the students to investigate a wide variety of possiblesolutions and observe the impact of design variations on processes. The presentation will alsoinclude a demonstration of the ICCs and the hosting web site. |
