Summary: | An obituary of professor Philip Collins who died on May 6, 2007 is presented. Collins, the eminent Dickens scholar and a former Chairman of the Society. Philip Collins was one of a generation of distinguished scholars, among them Raymond Williams, Richard Hoggart, and Edward Thompson, who began their university teaching careers in what were then departments of adult education. Philip's entire career was spent at the University of Leicester where in 1947 he was appointed a staff tutor at the then University College. He became Warden of Vaughan College, the centre for adult education, and in 1962 transferred to the English department, where he was elected to a Chair of English in 1964. He held the chair until his retirement in 1982. |
