Summary:The effects of meal ingestion and active standing on blood pressure were not additive in 20 patients >/<60 years of age free from apparent autonomic and cardiac dysfunction. The inadequate response of the low-frequency power of the systolic blood pressure wave and plasma norepinephrine to the meal ingestion suggests that peripheral sympathetic control of vascular tone is impaired in those exhibiting postprandial hypotension.
