Y aunque si nos aproximáramos al reinado de Felipe II, comprobaríamos lo enrevesado de su clase política en la que confluían caballeros, letrados, religiosos, o legos, es en el siglo XVII cuando, como afirma Bennassar, se produce "el reto más grave", "el reto del valido o privado, del favorito único en quien delega la realidad del poder"15.
