Summary:An investigation is described into the creation of a computer based musical instrument that, in real time, will translate a singing voice into a traditional, recognizable musical instrument. The primary goal is to make an instrument playable in a performance environment. As such, it is an interesting, and potentially useful study, of a human/computer interaction that requires management of the eccentricities associated with the human singing voice as well as the need to convert sung pitch into musical notes for playing on the target instrument. The effort includes techniques for pitch stabilization, vibrato filtering, latency reduction and external hardware for managing musical interpretation. It drives both on-board and, via the MIDI protocol, external virtual musical instruments.
