Summary:First of all, the issues of density, compactness and sensitivity to land consumption, typical of the current processes of transformation and enhancement of the territory. Underlying the development of the call for papers of this issue of Techne are a number of reflections related to: the role of city design in relation to technological innovation and social changes which led to the visionary definition of city projects at the beginning of the century; the concept of urban density and its correlations with the quality of life; the potential of new technologies in the construction of horizontal and vertical architectures. Identifying the reasons in favour of such typologies in fostering social, sustainable planning means evaluating the adoption of codified, controllable design methods and processes (for example taken from organised engineering), without however encouraging the marginalisation of architectural action or its interpretation as an autonomous artistic gesture in relation to the necessary integrated, organic vision of the design process. While vertical architecture has forced technological design to face the issues of complexity, the need to deal with economic concerns, the importance of a systemic, multidisciplinary approach requiring the progressive integration of design, technology, structural and plant design, and energy-saving strategies, also the horizontal type of building, in the light of recent instances of multifunctionality, polycentrism and simultaneity, leads towards models of interdisciplinary design capable of combining these aspects in their interacting complexity and in a unitary form.
