Summary: | On microscopical examination, there were glassy, flame-shaped eosinophilic inclusions in the cytoplasm of oligodendrocytes in the white matter of the cerebellum, the pons, and the cerebral hemispheres; the inclusions were positive for [alpha]-synuclein on immunostaining (Fig. 3A). These oligodendroglial inclusions were originally characterized by means of silver-impregnation methods and by immunostaining for ubiquitin, and they are the histopathological hallmark of multiple-system atrophy (Fig. 3B). |
