Summary:In order to treat premature rupture of the membranes properly, it is necessary to rule out the presence of other complications, such as infection or imminent delivery, and assess the degree of fetal distress. The approach depends on the gestational age; from week 34 on, the termination of the pregnancy is proposed, whereas prior to week 23, provided there is an acceptable volume of amniotic fluid, the decision may be made not to intervene for the time being. During the weeks in between, hospital admission and monitoring until the eventual presentation of complications is indicated. In addition, the controls proposed in the section of high-risk obstetric patients and the mode of terminating the pregnancy are discussed in detail.
