Summary:The history of European integration is a process encompassing the entire 20th century, which can only be properly understood by considering the various plans envisaged by the actors as well as their practices in this respect. On the one hand, the motivations of these actors have shown a remarkable continuity throughout the century, and on the other hand a recurrent opposition between two approaches, a contractual one and a liberal one, can be observed. Both approaches were to be found in all projects concerning European integration in the interwar years as well as in their implementation in the 1950s.
