Summary:This paper reports on a benchmarking study looking into the contribution business management systems make to the achievement of organizational objectives. It is of particular interest from two standpoints. First, it provides valuable learning from a benchmarking study of the system as opposed to a clearly identified process. Second, the study examined the contribution business management systems make to the achievement of an organization's objectives. The study was conducted by the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency. The results indicate that, in best practice companies, a company-wide management system is an integral part of the business, helping it achieve its goals.
