Summary:Embung (shallow lake) has primary role in supporting various activities in Nusa Tenggara Barat Province mainly in agriculture, live stock and as reserved raw water. Wet season duration is shorter than dry season in this province, therefore embung basically functioned as rain water reservoir in both wet season and as reserved raw water in dry season. The aim of this research was to gain basic limnological characteristics of embung specifically in Lombok Tengah Regency, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Province. Samples were taken in April 2012 at six sampling stasions at five embung embung, in 1) Batujai (reservoir), 2) Batujai (nearby floating fish cage/KJA), 3) Dabak (Sengkol), 4) Pengkemit, 5) Cerigi, and 6) Pejanggi. Observed parameter were N-nitrate, N-ammonia, N-nitrite, total nitrogen (TN), ortho-phosphate, total Phosphorous (TP), chlorophyll-a, Total Organic Matter (TOM), water temperature, pH, water conductivity, Total dissolved Solid (TDS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), DO saturation, turbidity, and Secchi depth. Results shows that embungs were prone to have high aquatics productivity based on its nitrogenous and phosphorous contents as well as chlorophyll-a. The concentrations of total organic matter and TDS were high while turbidity in embung Pejanggi was very high. Abundance, number of species and diversity indices of phytoplankton were low, while the abundance of zoobenthos was high.
