Summary: | The supposed author of this prophecy, Elizabeth Clare Prophet of the Church Universal and Triumphant, issued a statement denying she had ever made it, or a previous one naming the date of 1 October; though she told readers to look forward to twelve years of 'negative karma', and for her own part she was making survival preparations. More generally, and this was the leading theme of the paper, it is important to reject the notion, sometimes put forward, that English Protestant millenarianism was simply a Civil War phenomenon and went into decline after the Restoration. [...]that, to the readers of The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold, the sheer irrationality of the temptation to 'Sell Christ' stamps it with psychological truth. |
