Summary:The aim of this review is to create a guide explaining the commonly encountered drug-herbal product interactions with mechanisms especially for pharmacists, who are the closest health consultants to patients, and also for physicians, nurses and other health care providers; and to contribute to the rational use of drugs by increasing awareness of health providers on safe use of medicines as well as herbal products to prevent unwanted outcomes. Center for Disease Control and Prevention'un National Center for Health Statistics tarafından yönetilen National Health Interview Survey 2002'nin verileri kullanılarak yapılan bir çalışmada, tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedaviler uygulayan 65 yaş ve üzeri bireylerin son 12 ay boyunca %90'ının bitkisel ürünler, fonksiyonel yiyecekler (sarımsak), hayvansal destek ekleri (glukozamin) içeren doğal ürünler kullandığı, sarımsağı hipertansiyon, glukozamini de eklem ve artrit için tükettiği belirtilmiştir (Genser, 2008).
