Summary:A study focuses on leveraging investments and developing alliances among Research and Development partners. Representatives from the private sector, universities, and medical centers shared their experiences and views on this topic in 2 sessions conducted by the author at the SRA Executive Administrator Retreat held at The Homestead Resort in Midway, Utah, on July 19-21, 1998. The author synthesizes participants' comments and describes the various forms R&D alliances can take, the factors that motivate industry and university partners to participate in R&D alliances, what each can contribute to the research enterprise, and the barriers and issues that affect the development of successful partnerships.
