Summary: | While a review of literature is an essential part of any proposal submitted for funding, it often proves problematic for inexperienced proposal writers and can be poorly executed even by experienced researchers. A review of major guides to grantsmanship and the research proposal was conducted to identify common themes for the preparation and writing of the review of literature. Themes identified were: 1. completeness, 2. currentness, 3. discussion of research results and methodology, 4. criticism, 5. organization, and 6. uniqueness. A majority of grantsmanship guides focus primarily on how social service agencies or programs can compete successfully for grants. These guides are involved, to a much lesser extent, if at all, with the support of academic research. Thus, they rarely address the review of literature, or only in a superficial manner. There also does not appear to be any comprehensive resource that specifically provides assistance on bibliographic techniques, writing, goals, and organization for research proposals that are submitted to external funding agencies. |
