Summary:To be cost effective, surface repairs carried out on concrete structures have to perform satisfactorily over a sufficient period of time. Among the factors that can affect the durability of concrete repairs, drying shrinkage is certainly one of the most significant. The use of shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC) made with expansive binders thus represents an attractive alternative for achieving durable repairs. This paper presents the results of a study aimed at evaluating the potential use of repair concretes made with type K cement. The experimental program was designed to characterize the frost durability of SCC, to establish whether the bond between SCC and an old concrete substrate is affected by the expansion process, and, finally, to evaluate the efficiency of the prestressing effect generated through the bond. Although some aspects still need to be studied, the reported results are quite promising. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
