Summary:An analysis was undertaken to examine 3 research questions concerning partnerships in shippers' relations with carriers and warehousers. The questions concern whether: 1. the degree of partnership behavior can be measured with a multi-item scale, 2. factors that relate to partnership development can be identified, and 3. logistics service firms want more or less partnership in relationships with core customers. A scale was developed and tested to indicate 5 elements of building closer relationships: 1. planning, 2. sharing of benefits and burdens, 3. extendedness, 4. systematic operational information exchange, and 5. mutual operating controls. These dimensions were verified through case studies. As to the 2nd question, the analysis shows that specific assets are a key consistently related to partnership development. The results also indicate that carriers and warehousers prefer more partnership is their relationships with their core customers.
