Summary:Abstract Intertextuality has been approached with interest in studies about academic discourse since it is acknowledged that new knowledge can only be consolidated in relation to what has already been established (cf. In this view, this investigation focuses on the relation between the rhetorical structure and the presence of textual quotes in research articles from the field of social anthropology. The Introduction and the Conclusions are the most stable ones followed by the Theoretical Framework and the combination Results-Discussion. The distribution of the quotes in the sections also showed substantial characteristics of the discourse in these texts that can be used as a basis for ulterior comparative studies.
