Summary:These techniques are the practical answers prov'ded by language courses in answer to the problems inherent in starting to teach / learn a foreign language. They may be clarified in a description of the method used or exemplified in the course books and class-room practice following it. The analysis of one of these methods, interlinear translation, in several methods and courses published in the West over the last four hundred years, testifies to the permanence and diversity of the implementation of these techniques, but also to the pre-requisites necessary both for teachers and learners. The critical analysis of these techniques, which are often taken to be just "recipes", is insufficiently taken into account in the training of teachers (future).
