Summary:An abstract of a study by Isik et al examining the outcome and follow-up results of the surgical methods for Arnold-Chiari malformation type II is presented. Results shows that, in Chiari malformation type II, associated pathologies such as neural tube defects, hydrocephalus and syringomyelia may have to be corrected. If the patients have brain stem symptoms, despite the presence of a functioning shunt, the procedure of choice is a craniovertebral decompression. Children who have hydrocephalus, neural tube defects or syringomyelia must also be checked for Chiari malformation type II.
