Summary: | An abstract of a study by Mahattanakul et al examining the management of syringomyelia and scoliosis surgery is presented. Result shows that the two pathologies are closely interlinked. In severe curves syrinx treatment followed by shortening scoliosis correction proved safe. Their single syrinx recurrence points to the need of early scoliosis correction after the collapse of the syrinx. However, the low incidence of neurological deficit in older series raises doubts about the necessity of syrinx treatment prior to scoliosis correction and should be investigated prospectively. |
