Summary:The policies followed within the framework of the Marshall Plan aimed to make the Turkish economy the complement of the West European economy. In this context, economic aid packages were made available to improve the agricultural sector so that Turkey would meet the food needs of the industrializing West European countries. The amount of the direct aid granted to the agricultural sector under the Marshall Plan until 1955 was $76.5 million. 89% of this amount was allocated to the mechanization of agriculture. Tractors, which play an important role in the mechanization of agriculture, were distributed to Adana, Aydın, İzmir, Ankara, Konya and Eskişehir where wheat and cotton were cultivated intensively. With the increase in the use of tractors, the cultivation areas expanded by approximately 60%, thereby increasing the production of cotton, potato, lentil, wheat and rice.
