Summary:Sandvik Safurex®UXM" is a duplex stainless steel exclusively developed to withstand the corrosive environments present in the Stamicarbon Urea manufacturing process. During service, corrosion attacks have been observed at cross cut ends on components with elongated grain structures where corrosion selectively attacks the austenite phase. By manufacturing Safurex components with PM HIP, a fine grained isotropic microstructure is obtained. The isotropic structure of the HIPed material means that a small austenite spacing is maintained in all directions and thereby solved the problems with cross cut end corrosion by limiting the depth that the austenite phase corrosion can penetrate. In addition to this a better general corrosion resistance was achieved as well as higher impact toughness of components with large section thickness. Experimental data on corrosion and mechanical properties for PM HIP Safurex is presented, as well as examples on how advantages of PM HIP technology can be successfully implemented.
