Summary:In this article we present an animated map of the Magellan-Elcano voyage around the world, based on the accurate journal kept by Antonio Pigafetta. The map was designed using the Map Journal application created by ESRI. Apart from the story of the voyage itself, therein are discussed problems related to the "Line of Demarcation", also known as the Tordesillas meridian, which divided the New World into two exploration and colonizing areas between Spain and Portugal. The values of longitude found within the journal are related to this line. The stages of the voyage were represented along the map, along with the dates when the ships arrived and eventually left, the names of the visited locations (both former and modern ones, where appropriate) and the most significant information accounted by Pigafetta. Also presented therein are the stages that go into creating such a map, which enables the article to serve as an example to those interested in designing their own story maps. The map itself is a suggestive way of presenting information and could be also useful to individuals with a keen interest in history.
