Agonists and antagonists bind to different domains of the cloned (kappa) opioid receptor
Opioids exert their diverse physiological effects through specific membrane-bound receptors. The ability to dissociate agonist- and antagonist-binding sites on these receptors will facilitate the development of more specific kappa agonists that could have analgesic properties devoid of side effects.
