Summary:Demographic analysis of populations of sports federation members gives a clearer understanding of the way club sports are practiced, beyond the stereotypical image conveyed by the sports media. What happens between the time a person joins a sports federation and the moment he or she decides to leave? What is a sporting career? The founding studies of sports demography reveal the exceptional mobility of sporting populations, the effects of age and sex and the existence of individuals who drop their sporting activity but return to it later, though the question has rarely been approached in terms of population dynamics. The aim of this short paper is firstly to retrace the history of sports demography and explain the underlying rationale, and secondly to propose a methodological extension by applying a duration analysis to the population of members of the Fédération française de natation (French swimming federation, FFN) between 1997 and 2003.
