Summary: | Learning encompasses two meanings: (1) the acquisition of skill or know-how, which implies the physical ability to produce some action and (2) the acquisition of know-why, which implies the ability to articulate a conceptual understanding of an experience. Organisations ultimately learn via their individual members. Hence, theories of individual learning are crucial for understanding organisational learning. Elements of an organisation's culture may facilitate or inhibit the process of continuous learning and development at all levels of learning -individual, team, and organisation. The fundamental character or spirit of a learning culture can be encapsulated in a set of eight core values (OCTAPACE) as suggested by Pareek (1997): openness, confrontation, trust, authenticity, proaction, autonomy, collaboration, and experimentation. All said and done, 'Learning disability' of any kind will hinder the processes of individual, team and organisational learning. Consequently, the organisation will be branded as 'learning disadvantaged' and its existence would be numbered by a few days in the context of a highly turbulent, complex and fast changing business world. Identity of interest; mutual trust, confidence and goodwill; and shared vision and determination to excel among individuals and teams in the organisation will definitely go a long way in arresting the learning disability. |
