The Optimal Time for Harvesting the Seeds of Gui 39722, the Female Parent of a Maize Hybrid Guidan 0810

The results showed that the seeds of Gui 39722 harvested 43 d after pollination (the fifth stage) had the greatest germination rate, seedling height, vigor index, root dry weight, shoot dry weight and germination potential, and high 1 000-kemel weight (very close to the highest level), root length,...

Summary:The results showed that the seeds of Gui 39722 harvested 43 d after pollination (the fifth stage) had the greatest germination rate, seedling height, vigor index, root dry weight, shoot dry weight and germination potential, and high 1 000-kemel weight (very close to the highest level), root length, number of roots per seedling and root-shoot ratio. [...]43 d after pollination was the optimal time for harvesting the seeds of Gui 39722, when the effective accumulated temperature after pollination reached 780.7 °C and the ear leaf dried. Key words Maize; Hybrid Guidan 0810; Female parent Gui 39722; Harvesting time; Seed vigor Seeds as a special high valueadded agricultural product has become an important commod ity in current agricultural markets[1]. Since hybrid seeds are widely used in the production of maize, the seed yield and quality of female parent directly determine the seed yield and quality of the hybrids. [91 revealed that the degree of maturity affected seed vigor, and the seeds those were harvested when the milk line was positioned halfway between the tip and base of the kernel had the highest germination rate, the highest vigor and a moisture content of about 40% [4 Additionally, the correlations between harvest stage and seed germination, seed vigor in laboratory and fields are still uncertain, and the method to determine the optimal time of seed harvest based on milk line development or grain moisture content is complicated to operate in actual production. [...]it is of great significance to determine the optimal harvest stage for different maize varieties, and the characteristics of plants and ears at this stage. In the present study, the correlations between seed yield, vigor the degree of maturity of Gui 39722, the female parent of Guidan 0810 were evaluated by measuring 1 000-kernel weight, germination rate and seedling traits, to determine the optimal time for seed harvest and to provide a theoretical basis for the production of highyield and high-vigor seeds. In summary, the seeds of Gui 39722 harvested 43 d after pollination (the fifth stage) had the greatest germination rate, seedling height, vigor index, root dry weight, shoot dry weight and germination potential, and high 1 000-kernel weight (very close to the highest level), root length, number of roots per seedling and root-shoot ratio.
