Summary:Superfast broadband connectivity is now seen as essential by businesses and by most homeowners, while the government targets 95% coverage of the UK by 2017. The Building (Amendment) Regulations 2016, implementing the Broadband Cost Reduction Directive 2014/61/EU in England and Wales, aim to reduce costs and obstacles to superfast broadband. They introduce a Part R for Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010, with a requirement 1 that all new or existing buildings subject to major renovation are equipped with infrastructure to support superfast broadband of at least 30Mbps. The Building Regulations take effect on Jan 1, 2017 in England and at a few energy-generating sites in Wales, but they will not apply to works subject to existing building control notices and applications that have already been submitted.
