Summary: | An abstract of a study by Kohler and Shatwell providing arguments for the prevalence of nitrogen limitation of polymictic lakes during summer and demonstrate expedience and sustainability of N load reductions to fight harmful algal blooms is presented. The biomass-specific frequency of heterocysts increased at DIN (nitrate + ammonium) concentrations below 0.2 mg N/L but, due to the declining Nostocales biomass, the total number of heterocysts did not significantly change. |
