Summary:Genetic association studies have identified the iron-regulatory protein IRP2 (also known as IREB2) as an important candidate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) susceptibility gene, suggesting a functional disease link between iron metabolism and COPD. By performing Perls Prussian Blue staining on human lung tissue obtained from10 COPD patients (GOLD stage IV) and 10 healthy donors (non-smokers except one ex-smoker and one current smoker), we identified alveolar macrophages as the predominant cell population responsible for the increased iron staining in COPD lung tissue, with some COPD patients also exhibiting prominent iron staining in the bronchiolar epithelium.
