Summary: | Motorcycle popularity has increased in recent years, along with motorcyclist fatalities. While passenger car drivers realized a 27.96% drop in the fatality rate from 1996 to 2006, motorcyclists had a 28.8% increase. Attributed accident factors include: driver/vehicle demographics such as training, age, motorcycle type, and experience; human error and violations; environmental factors; cognitive factors such as situational awareness and personality; and social factors. Primary fatal accident causes, largely attributed to perceptual or skills-based errors, may be caused, at least in part, by cognitive and social factors; and addressing those factors may have an even greater effect on reducing accident risk.
