Summary:Information processing by entrepreneurs has been associated with problem solving and decision making, innovation, opportunity recognition and with the entrepreneur's alertness. It has been posited as a frame which is needed to organize research across the domain of entrepreneurship and as a guide for future related research. According to the literature, weak signals contain opportunity laden rich information; and information processing, innovation and opportunity identification are closely related to one another, opportunity being a critical attribute of entrepreneurship. The objective of this paper is to review the progress made by a seven-year research program on human information processing in SMEs; present the methodology used to explore, uncover and understand what lies behind human information processing about which little is known; discuss the major research issues raised; present the theoretical, practical and classroom results to date; show some of the limitations and outline the next short-term steps and possible long-term directions.
