Summary:During the age of Fordism, prison labor for commercial purposes was outlawed in the United States. Since the end of the 1970 s prison labor for commercial purposes has been legalized again and now flourishes. The article highlights various elements of the prison labor discourse and its resilience is explained with the mutually supportive arguments: disciplining the superfluous labor force, increasing public budgetary constraints, the influence of the lobby of the private prison industry and especially racism, which targets not only the black population but also Latin American immigrants.
