Summary:Every anecdote concluded with the student giving an account of a successful academic career and Grant's receipt of the only thing he demanded in payment: a school mug from the place of their employment, which he displayed prominently in his office like trophies. A now legendary story at Duke University was of a Wackerite demanding to meet with the highest levels of the graduate school administration to contest her grade. Why would the author spend a decade studying a man who was (here Grant paused sheepishly) "sort of a jerk?" It was a perfect Grant moment. For Grant and many Wackerites after him, the work did not need to redeem its subjects, but must always try to explore the heights and depths of human potential that might yet bear a little meaning into the future.
