Summary:In order to use the Egyptian calcium carbonate as filler in the industries such as plastic, rubber and paint, calcium carbonate particles should be well-refined and in a dispersed form. Calcite needs surface modification process to obtain hydrophobic surface. In recent study, the surface of the Egyptian calcium carbonate was modified by mechano-chemical surface modification process with stearic acid with the simultaneous ultra-fine grinding using micronizer called "Planetary Mill" by mechano-chemical method. The comparison between wet process and dry process is studied. TGA, FTIR, oil absorption, water absorption, wettability and organic coated content were used to determine the properties of modified Egyptian calcium carbonate. The results showed that the dry process was the best process and optimum stearic acid dose was determined as 1% to obtain hydrophobic calcium carbonate surface and the mechano-chemical method could positively influence the modification of calcium carbonate.
