Summary:In recent years, like other developing countries, Turkey has been one of the fastest growing power markets in the world with its young and growing population, rapid urbanization. In parallel, Turkey's demand for electricity has been increasing steadily. Because of its indigenous sources are limited, it is a highly dependent country in terms of electricity production. So Turkey has to use its domestic energy source in terms of secure, reliable and affordable source. Coal particularly lignite is a logical choice. But the share of import in the electricity production of Turkey continually increases every year and electricity production from its domestic coal based power plants decreases. There are several reasons for decreasing coal usage. In this paper, electricity production of Turkey during the period of 2002-2012 was outlined. Coal reserves and coal-fired power plants in the country were also introduced briefly. This study also reviews recent clean coal technologies. Suggestions on using of lignite reserves to produce electricity were mentioned.
