Summary: | Positive behavior intervention and support (PBIS) or sometimes referred to as School-wide positive behavior and support (SWPBS), is a program designed to address student behavior within the school setting. PBIS is a multi-tier system with individual interventions increasing as the student’s discipline increases. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to discover how PBIS influences student behavior and school culture in middle schools located in South Carolina. This study described the experiences and perceptions of 21 middle school teachers, three middle school administrators, and nine middle school parents in reference to PBIS and its impact on student discipline and school culture. The study consisted of 33 interviews discovering the participants’ perceptions of how PBIS influenced student behavior and school culture by answering the following research question and subquestions: How does PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) influence student behavior and school culture in middle schools in South Carolina? And Subquestions: How has PBIS helped improve student behavior? How has PBIS helped improve the culture of the school? The data analysis of the study revealed that PBIS had a positive impact on student discipline and school culture according to the participants’ perceptions. The study also revealed that consistency with the program helps to ensure the success and viability of the program. The data provided evidence that PBIS could assist schools and school districts to establish an environment where students could succeed socially, emotionally and possible academically. |
