Summary:Vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency (levels <30ng/mL) has been associated with adverse outcomes in a number of conditions, including symptomatic asthma. They have been linked to various pathological mechanisms including increased airway responsiveness, impaired lung function, increased exacerbation frequency and reduced responsiveness to steroid medications. However, until this current randomised, double-masked study, it was not known whether supplementing inhaled corticosteroids with oral Vitamin D3 would improve outcomes in patients with symptomatic asthma and low Vitamin D levels. Researchers in the VIDA trial hypothesised that vitamin D supplementation would improve the clinical efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids in patients with asthma as measured by exacerbations, lung function, and the dose of inhaled corticosteroids required to maintain asthma control.
