Summary:Fray Diego Cisneros (1737-1812) was a Hieronymite monk at El Escorial and a librarian at the Royal Library. In 1772 he moved out to Peru where he worked as a property manager of some encomiendas granted by Philip IV of Spain to the monastery as a means of payment for the foundation of the system of prayers for the deceased created by the king himself; he also administered the sale of the liturgical books called "Nuevo Rezado". His broad cultural background and liberal ideas enabled him to be in contact with Lima intellectuals and also be part of the "Sociedad de Amantes del Pais", a cultural society which was the publisher of the newspaper "Mercurio Peruano" (1790-1795), a significant erudite project of the 1790s.
