Summary: | 21-Hydroxymethylprednisolone (II), 21-hydroxymethylhydrocortisone (VIII) and 21, 21-bis (hydroxymethyl) prednisolone (VI) were synthesized by the aldol condensation of the parent steroids with formaldehyde. When 21-hydroxymethylprednisolone diacetate (III) was passed through a column of aluminum oxide, a light yellow compound was obtained and the structure was assigned to 21-methyl-11β, 17α-dihydroxypregna-1, 4-diene-3, 20, 21-trione 17-acetate (X). The mechanism of the formation of X from III was also proposed. |
