Summary:As a result of the increasing human longevity, demographic aging is a global reality, particularly in industrialized countries. Associated with that demographic aging and, due to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases and as such most disabling, the number of dependencies and disabilities are also increasing, which necessarily implies the presence of a third person in the care of dependent old people, and this function is usually assumed by the family, within which an element assumes the role of an informal caregiver. With the aim of obtaining knowledges on the informal caregiving in the district of Bragança, it was drawn a descriptive and analytical study with a sample of 232 caregivers. It was concluded that there is a higher prevalence of persons of the female gender, married, and daughters of the cared person and with a basic education level of education. The average age is 57.96 years, with a largest representation of people over 70 years of age. There was, however, a proportion of 11.6% of male caregivers, which highest proportion belongs to the group 65 and more years. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
