To this day his living descendente bear witness to his refusal to adopt the celibate life of the Catholic priest. Undersheriff of London, barrister and Bencher of Lincoln's Inn, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, Lord Chancellor of England, here was a man of the world, immersed in politics, the frequenter of courts, the intimate of the sovereign who became his murderer.
