Summary:Performance management indicates the existence of performance gaps, which areas require management focus and the realignment of organizational objectives. In healthcare organizations, the measurement of performance can identify sub optimized treatments and improve the quality of services. Due to major reforms put in place in the area, performance measurement in healthcare has received growing attention from practitioners and academics in the recent years. Therefore, this paper presents a bibliometric review of publications on performance measurement in healthcare within the last five years (2007-2011). The main objective of the analysis is to identify fundamental matters that have led research in recent years as well as the characteristics of the research development of the topic under study. In order to achieve this goal, a review was conducted based on the documents found in three databases: CAPES, Thomson Reuters Web of KnowledgeSM, and Scopus. The search yielded 103 papers which were analyzed and classified regarding to purpose and main theme, authorship, methodology, source and country of origin. The results indicate the attempt to overcome technical difficulties in measuring performance in health sector as the main motive for the research studies, specially the adequate evaluation and comparison of performance, and configuration of incentive programs. Concerns related to verifying the effectiveness of approaches and the study of side effects also showed a strong incidence. Quality is shown as the main motivation for the development and improvement of performance management in the period under analysis. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
