Summary:An abstract of a study by Synder et al discussing three areas of Mississippi public school foodservice and vending that have been impacted by implementation of the Local Wellness Policy (LWP) and the Mississippi Healthy Schools Act is presented. With the implementation of the LWP, many schools are reevaluating the foods offered and sold both in the cafeteria and through campus vending. With strict legislation through the Healthy Schools Act, Mississippi schools face even more rigorous legislation. Just over 13% reported vending was available before school, followed by 10.6% before and during lunch. However, 309% reported vending was prohibited on campus, it is encouraging to note a variety of healthy foods are frequently offered in the cafeteria, with more than one-third schools prohibiting vending. This data may be used to demonstrate the importance of policy in improving the quality and availability of foods offered.
