Summary:When we discuss about language knowledge, we always equate it with knowledge of grammar. Grammatical knowledge is always viewed to represent language knowledge. In fact, grammar is only part of the overall knowledge of a language. Besides grammar, language knowledge includes knowledge of culture, social life of speakers, taboo, decency and morality, pragmatics and so on. In this paper, I will describe the actual concept of language knowledge based on theories from disciplines of linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistic, pragmatic and so on. The concept of actual language knowledge will be discussed in the context of Malay language education policy, and language as a catalyst in the preservation of civilization. I will summarise on the actual concept of Malay language knowledge, and I will also gives an assessment on the Malay language skills amongst Malaysian. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
