Summary:The archaeological evidence of Dutch New Jersey, or what was known as “Pavonia,” has mostly been destroyed by modern development; however, the archaeology of Pavonia is not without hope. Despite more than 350 years of mutilation it remains possible to obtain some sense of the extent and nature of colonial Dutch New Jersey. This chapter is an attempt to evaluate both the actual and the potential archaeological signature of the New Netherland Colony. It is not a rich haul, but there are a few locations, such as Burlington Island, Newbold Island, and Bergen Neck, where dogged research can reasonably be expected to produce significant information on the Dutch colonial enterprise.
