Summary:In Chapter 1, we studied some models for patterns in one-way tables. These methods can often be extended directly to larger tables. Here, we shall be interested in the dependence of a response distribution on explanatory variables in a variety of contexts. Thus, as often in statistics, we shall distinguish between response variables and explanatory variables af!-d look for patterns in the dependence of (the distribution of) the former on the latter. In some cases, we may even be able to expect a certain precise pattern of dependence for theoretical reasons; in the latter context, we shall conclude the chapter by looking at an example from genetics.
